Question

i have a 2003 ford fusion 2, on take off in 1st gear there is a shudder( no riding) it grinds in reverse unless the car is switched off then I can get in reverse like normal, some of the gears do appear stiffer than usual apart from that no overrevving etc. is it clutch (if so is it best to do a complete clutch including cylinders etc) or gearbox?

Answer

Yes it sounds like the clutch, a full clutch kit should be ok unless you find other parts that need replacing when the transmission is removed Regards

Question

Hi, I've just bought an 04 Mondeo 2.0 TDCI 130 LX with 72000 miles and find that the clutch bites really qucikly and also have difficulty in selecting reverse gear when the car is cold. When changing gears it is really stiff but after driving for a mile it becomes easy to change. Is this normal as a mechanic told me that it is common on Fords when cold as the gearbox oil is thick?

Answer

No this is not normal

Question

hi ive got a 2001 ford focus the clutch pedlebox creates an annoying .noise when driving ive been told by fords that its a fault causing undue movement in the clutch pedle itself and the pedlebox to bulkhead and that there is a modified steel plate that can be fitted to stop this noise and movement but it cost 300 pounds i think thats a bit of a expence considering its a manufacturing fault i would be gratefull if you could confirm the above and the price and or if theres an easier way to fix this fault yours j winters

Question

I have an '02 Mondeo 1.8LX which had its clutch replaced by Jennings 10months ago (10,000miles). Now, I get a continous transmisison noise which occurs in all forward gears when on the move (not present in neutral or if clutch depressed, thus not a wheel bearing). I've been advised by your staff that it could likely be the slave cylinder and or clutch release "thrust" bearing which apparently aren't routinely renewed when replacing the clutch. Please can you advise on (1) what warranty your work has when replacing a clutch by trained Ford technicians (2)why these other components aren't renewed as a matter of course at the same time. Given the labour intensive and expensive nature of this strip-down and repair, I feel it disappointing that I wasn't advised of these other potential pit-falls at the time the work was perfomed.

Answer

a clutch has 2 years unlimited warranty provided it is a manufacturers defect, most items are checked when replacing a clutch, but if a part looks ok and the customer has not complained of any noise, then it is hard to justify replacing parts just because they could fail in future

Question

I have a Fusion 2, 1.4 TDCI with 28,000 miles. Recently, I've been experiencing some juddering when I pull away in first gear. Once I'm rolling it seems fine and the clutch is not slipping. There is also an intermittent sound that is coming from the front of the car when I dip the clutch. It is very sporadic, sounds like something spinning and slowing down (the pitch lowers and then stops after a few seconds). Is it a clutch problem or is it likely to be a fault with the flywheel?

Answer

Sorry i would need to road test the vehicle, i would suggest taking your car to your local dealer

Question

I have a 2007(07 plate) Fiesta Zetec 1.4 and when I select reverse gear I get a loud clunking sound like there is some clutch drag. The Ford garage I took it to for it's 12 month service said it's normal for a Fiesta and would be no problem - I would like if you think this is correct? Regards Tony Martin.

Answer

Ford say it is ok if you wait for a while until the gearbox is disconected from the engine, then select reverse and there is no clunk,

Question

I have a ford S-max 1.8 diesel the clutch was replaced together with the flywheel and just after 900km the clutch is burned again what may be the reason for that.

Answer

Cluches can burn out for a number of reasons, Modern clutches can not be used to hold a vehicle on a hill or in traffic for any period of time. Best practice i have found is to disconect from gear remove foot from clutch and apply handbrake regards

Question

I have recently bought a 05 Mondeo LX with 25000 on clock. When in motion gear changes are all fine however when stationary, either after puling up to junction and dropping in to neutral or from cold, then the gear selection can become very stiff to the point that the car lurches forward when trying to put into first, feels as though the clutch is not fully depressed. Once a gear has been selected however then the rest of the gear box seems to "open up" and subsequent gear selection is fine until drawing to a stop again. The car still has warranty til March, any suggestions?

Answer

Take it back to the dealer to sort the problem out, the longer you wait the more problems you can have

Question

My Ford Fusion Style Climate is 18 months old and ever since the day of purchase it has had an intermittant squeak when changing gear. It has had a new spring on the clutch pedal and the compulsary repair to the clutch. Whenever I go to the garage, and a mechanic sits in the car, it does not squeak. It can go for days and then begin again. Have you any ideas? It has got no better nor any worse since purchase day.

Answer

Sorry as with all noises it is best to have a technician road test the vehicle with you

Question

I have been repairing Ford Transits for the best part of 20 years one of my customers run a fleet of ten 2.4TD rear wheel drive each doing a 100k a year. The 2.4TD has a problem with the starter motor drives failing due to significantly high levels of metal dust produced within the dual-mass flywheel. Lucas will no longer stand the warranty on the starter motors. I have found that the local motor factor supplies a modified flywheel the flywheel is genuine ford comes complete with clutch kit bearing fork and bolts. These are defiantly ford components the flywheels been machined as a solid flywheel without the dual-mass unit I have fitted two kits over the last few months. This week I had a Transit minibus which needed the clutch changing because of the dust problem Lucas suggest cleaning out the bell housing this is impossible without removing the gearbox I tried ordering the modified kit from the local Ford dealer the kit came and was the old version I spoke to the guy in the stores who claimed not to know anything about the modified flywheel the kit sat on the workshop floor for two days waiting for them to get in contact with the technical people at Ford. This morning I had the local factor send the modified kit and fitted that today. The factor says the modified kit is for the 2.4 the 2.0 still uses the dual-mass flywheel can you give me any advice on the points I have made I have kept the boxes that the kit and flywheel came in with the Ford numbers these are ford boxes from Turkey I think. The vehicles in the fleet that have had the modified flywheels don’t appear to have starter motor problems now the only difference is that the clutch seems to be slightly heaver on the clutch pedal.

Answer

The modified flywheel kit is advised by Ford for replacement due to exessive clutch replacements. if the vehicles do not have a problem of clutch failures there is no need to replace all the componants.
