Question

I have a 1999 (V) Focus 1.8 tddi that has done 87000 miles. I have noticed that there is a significant amount of oil in the intercooler and also an amount of oil in both of the pipes leading from the intercooler. There is a similar amount of oil in both pipes, but slightly more in the one leading to the turbo. The car emits quite a lot of black smoke under full throttle and feels a little sluggish. Other than it drives as usual. Fuel economy is unaffected. What do you think could be causing this?

Answer

You will always find oil in these pipes, but without seeing the vehicle i would not be able to say if it is exessive. does the engine use a lot of oil if not it could be normal, black smoke is normaly a fuel problem injectors sticking or egr problem. if it was burning oil it would be more blue in colour and you would smell it

Question

I have a focus 1.6 lx and i have noticed a noise from my geerbox when the engine is cold is this normal

It's always very difficult to diagnose a noise without actually hearing it, it may just be the clutch but really it should be looked at. Pop it into your local JenningsFord dealership, you will have to leave it overnight so that we can listen to the noise when the engine is cold, and we can diagnose the problem if there is one.

Question

I have had several years of faultless service from my car, but recently it has become very difficult to keep the revs up far enough to keep it running when I stop at junctions. This is particularly bad first thing in the morning. What is the problem?

Answer

It could be down to a number of things. Firstly, always carry out basic checks before looking into technical matters. Check plug gaps, HT resistance and tappet settings. Also check for air leaks on the manifolds and check & clean breather systems. If all these check out OK, then a visit to the local Jennings dealership is well worth a try.

Question

The engine on my car seems to be extremely temperamental. When I start it, it turns over very slowly until it cuts out. What could be wrong with it?

Answer

You could carry out some basic engine checks, such as checking plug gaps, checking for air leaks in manifolds and check and clean the breather systems. If this does not improve the situation, you should take the car to your local dealer to be examined.

Asked on 06 Jun 2001 | Ask a follow up question

Question

My car often overheats in hot weather. What should I do to prevent this happening on long journeys?

Answer

Check that the cooling fan functions correctly. It is advisable that you get this rectified properly to avoid the engine sustaining any permanent damage. Fuel consumption is also affected by an overheating engine - as is oil consumption, so check your oil levels regularly.
