A teenager from Jarrow who thought his career dream had been shattered, is back on track and looking forward to a bright future and it's all thanks to his local Ford dealer, Jennings Ford Direct.

From a very young age, Robert Gascoyne, 17, from Fellgate, has always had a burning ambition to become a motor mechanic.

After leaving Jarrow School last year, Robert contacted Tyneside Training Services who sourced a suitable placement as an apprentice motor technician at another motor dealer in Gateshead.

Unfortunately, six months ago Robert was faced with an unforeseen dilemma when the dealership was forced to close.

"My dream was shattered," said Robert. "I knew I had to find another placement and quickly."

Robert contacted Jennings' service manager, Brian Johnston, who is based at the group's Ford Direct branch in South Shields.

Brian Johnston, said; "During the initial phone call with Robert, it was evident that he was extremely ambitious and keen to learn."

Understanding and sympathising with Robert's unfortunate predicament and following a number of discussions with his training officer, Brian was delighted to arrange an informal interview and offer a placement within the service department at Jennings Ford Direct.

Robert went on to say; "I'm over the moon. I've only been working here a short time, but already I've learnt a great deal. The apprenticeship programme allows you to gain valuable, practical experience and at the same time work towards a recognised qualification. It's great."

In addition to continuous on-the-job training, which involves on-going assessments, Robert's training also includes attending Gateshead College’s ‘Centre of Excellence’ training centre on the Team Valley Trading Estate.

Robert's ultimate goal is to become a Ford Master Technician.

As soon as he successfully completes the three-year Ford approved apprenticeship programme, he will then be given the opportunity to progress through to the Ford Masters Technician programme, which includes three levels of accreditation; Service Maintenance Technician, Diagnostic Technician and Master Technician.
