Alex Lofthouse, 65, from Boldon, hung up his uniform for the last time at the Newcastle Road dealership, where he has worked in the busy parts department for the past 39 years.
Alex said; “It was quite emotional and I was sad to be leaving, because I’ve made a lot of friends here at Jennings, but after working in the industry for nearly four decades, I felt it was the right time for me to retire.
“I’m really looking forward to spending more time at home, although I do have quite a lot of DIY jobs to catch up on, so I won’t be putting my feet up just yet!”
After leaving Boldon Comprehensive School at 15 years of age, Alex spent the next five years in the Merchant Navy. He then worked as a labourer and hod carrier at various building sites in and around the region, prior to embarking on a career in the motor industry.
Initially, Alex started working for another motor dealer firm in the region, prior to it later being taken over by Jennings Motor Group.
Over the years, he has gained valuable experience and knowledge working in just about every role in the parts department, including as a driver delivering parts to businesses across the North East, covering telephone sales and as a parts advisor, as well as working on the front counter where he dealt with customers face-to-face.
Colin Ramshaw, parts manager at Jennings Ford Direct in South Shields, said; “On behalf of Jennings Motor Group, I would like to wish Alex a very happy and healthy retirement.
“He has been an asset to the team at Shields, and he will be a big miss in the department.”
