An Apprenticeship programme has steered an ambitious motorsport enthusiast from North Tyneside on the road to full-time employment at Jennings Ford, part of the multi-award winning Jennings Motor Group.
Last year, 24-year-old, Steven Donaldson, from Whitley Bay, embarked on a 12-month Apprenticeship programme at Jennings Ford’s Eslington Park dealership in Gateshead, with the aim to become a fully-fledged sales representative within the busy parts department.
That dream has now become a reality for the youngster who has not only gained valuable hands-on experience through on-the-job training, but he has also successfully achieved a National Vocational Qualification in vehicle parts.
Steven said; “I thoroughly enjoyed the Apprenticeship, it was the perfect option for me as it allowed me to learn new skills, gain additional qualifications and earn a wage at the same time and now I have secured a full-time job, which is absolutely fantastic and a dream come true.”
Working as part of a four-strong team, Steven is responsible for ordering parts for customers and staff, monitoring stock control, inputting orders onto the computer system, in addition to liaising with both customers and business clients.
Welcoming Steven on board, parts manager, Colin Ramshaw, said; “As a company, we are committed to the Apprenticeship programme, with many youngsters having already been given opportunities across a variety of departments within our branch network across the region.
“Steven is an enthusiastic and keen individual and an asset to the parts department at Gateshead.”
Steven became interested in cars when he passed his test at the age of 18 and purchased his first car - a 1.4 Ford Fiesta Flame model.
Steven added; “I was always messing about under the bonnet because I wanted to learn how things worked.”
After leaving Whitley Bay High School with eight GCSEs, Steven’s initial goal was to become a plumber, but after successfully achieving a Level 2 National Vocational Qualification, he was unable to find suitable employment within the industry.
The next couple of years, Steven gained experience working for the family business, in addition to working as a labourer and as a delivery driver, prior to the internet steering him towards the Apprenticeship programme.
Jennings Ford in Gateshead provides the entire new Ford model line-up, in addition to being able to cater for customers after sales needs with a service, accident repair centre and parts department on site.
