Ian’s ready to take on the challenge

A member of staff at Jennings Motor Group is geared for success and it’s all thanks to a recent promotion.
Ian Grant, 49, from South Shields, is heading up the Ford and Mazda car and commercial service departments at the group’s Riverside Road supersite in Sunderland.
The promotion, which came about as a result of a former colleague retiring towards the end of last year, has been welcomed by a delighted Ian.
“This is an excellent opportunity for me and a challenge which I am ready for and very much looking forward to,” said Ian.
In his new role of car and commercial aftersales manager, Ian’s new tasks will entail being responsible for the day-to-day running of the car and commercial service departments, ensuring the highest possible service is continuously delivered to customers, making sure vehicles are serviced and repaired within the allocated time scale and recruiting new members of staff.
Since leaving school at the age of 16, Ian has always worked in the motor industry and originally served his time as a mechanic at Streamline Garages in South Shields.
Ian also spent a few years experiencing being his own boss when he set up his mobile motor mechanic business, but unfortunately the business had to cease trading as a result of the affect of the miners’ strike in the 80s.
In 1987, Ian was appointed as a technician at JenningsFord’s South Shields dealership and later transferred to the Washington branch where he was promoted to workshop controller.
In 2000, Ian left JenningsFord and started working for Arriva Ford in Sunderland as service manager, but he was soon on Jennings’ payroll again when they acquired the business from Arriva, two years later.
“After 13 years, leaving JenningsFord was a hard decision for me to make and at the time I thought it was the right decision, but I soon realised that wasn’t the case,” Ian added.
Since the acquisition, Ian retained his role of service manager up until his recent promotion to car and commercial aftersales manager.
Whilst heading the service department, Ian and his team have been the recipients of Ford’s most prestigious awards, The Chairman’s Award. The Award is in recognition of achieving outstanding levels of customer service.
The service and commercial service departments are responsible for carrying out services and repairs to vehicles. In 2008 at total of 8000 vehicles were serviced and repaired at the Sunderland dealership.
