Jennings Ford Direct employee reaps reward after achieving loyalty milestone

A member of staff at Jennings Ford Direct, part of the multi-award winning Jennings Motor Group, has been rewarded after achieving half a century worth of loyalty.

Allan Etherington, from South Shields, started working in the parts department at the Newcastle Road dealership, formerly known as Selwoods, after leaving school in 1966 – and it is the only job he has had in his working career.

When Jennings Motor Group took over the branch in 1995, it was made company policy to recognise and reward those members of staff with previous years served. Jennings Motor Group reward staff after 15 years’ loyal service, then they are presented after every five years.

Loyal and dedicated Allan, who has worked as a parts advisor at the South Shields dealership for the past five decades, said;

“I’ve always enjoyed everything about my job and I get on with my work colleagues who, over the years, have become good friends, so there’s been no reason for me to find alternative employment.  I have worked with some of my colleagues for more than three decades.

“We have a good team at South Shields and a good manager within the parts department.  If you’re happy in your job, why change it.”

In his role as a parts advisor, Allan is responsible for liaising with existing and potential customers, processing orders and meeting deadlines, in addition to also spending time out and about on the region’s roads delivering parts to customers. 

Recalling how things have changed over the years, Alan went on to say;

“When I first started working in the parts department everything was done manually, but nowadays everything is all computerised.  Today’s advanced technology, enables us to order and process items quickly and provide a much more efficient service to our customers, which is constantly improving, in addition to being able to utilise our time more effectively.”

The favourite part of the job for Allan is talking to his customers, he added; “The customer-facing part of the role has always been the most enjoyable for me.  We have a loyal customer database, but we also obtain new customers on a daily basis.”

The presentation took place at the South Shields dealership where group parts manager, Kevin Gibbon, who Allan previously worked with at the dealership prior to Kevin’s promotion and transfer to the group’s Middlesbrough site, handed the loyalty vouchers to Allan.

Kevin said; “I would like to congratulate Allan for achieving such a milestone.  It was an absolute pleasure presenting the vouchers for his continuous loyalty.  I worked with Allan for many years when I was based at the South Shields dealership and I know how hard working, dedicated and conscientious he is – he’s been an absolute asset to Jennings over the years.”

Like Allan, the majority of staff employed by Jennings Motor Group, are loyal and longstanding.  This year, 29 members of staff will receive rewards for a combined 660 years of loyalty.
