Personal circumstance has further inspired a member of staff at Jennings Ford Direct in South Shields to assist more Motability customers on the road to freedom.

Type One Diabetic, Ray Maitland, 48, from North Shields, is a true inspiration to his friends and work colleagues at the Newcastle Road dealership, having recently returned to work following an amputation to his lower left leg.

Dedicated Ray, who is one of only a few registered disabled individuals working as a Motability specialist in the UK, is more determined than ever to ensure Motability customers across South Tyneside continue to receive the highest level of service, advice and guidance.

His focus and determination is not only down to his recent experience, but also as a result of the number of get well wishes he received from his customers, friends and work colleagues whilst he was absent from work.

Ray said; “I would like to thank my customers for the hundreds of cards and well wishes I received when I was off work. The fact that people went to the trouble to send cards and messages of support, helped me through a difficult period in my life.”

Ray, who has had to adapt to manoeuvring around the dealership in a wheelchair until his prosthetic leg is fitted, is feeling confident about the future.

He added; “I’m extremely positive about the future and particularly looking forward to being able to help more customers who will be able to benefit from speaking at first hand to a Motability specialist who is also registered disabled.”

“Admittedly, it can be hard at times, but at the end of the day, there’s no point in feeling sorry for yourself because there’s always someone worse off than you.”

Ray started working for Jennings Ford 18 years ago when he joined the former Bridge Street branch in Morpeth as a parts representative. When the branch relocated to the former Coopies Lane dealership, Ray transferred to the sales department and took on the role of Motability specialist.

In 2001, Ray transferred to the group’s Newcastle Road dealership in South Shields, to oversee the Motability department. Since then, he has built a strong customer database and is currently responsible for providing a service to more than 400 motability customers across the region.

David Walker, general sales manager at Jennings Ford Direct, said; “Ray is a true inspiration to us all. He has coped and adapted tremendously and on behalf of everyone at the branch and across the Group, we would like to welcome him back to work.”

Motability customers eligible to purchase a car from JenningsFord Direct, can take advantage of the full Ford range which is available to test drive at the dealership in South Shields. Models include the Ford Ka, Fiesta, Focus, Fusion, C-MAX, Mondeo, Galaxy and S-MAX.
