Star pupil’s writing skills results in new team strips

A persuasive writing exercise has resulted in a brand new set of football strips for pupils at a local primary school.
When Year 4 pupils at Grange Park primary school on Swan Street in Sunderland, were set a persuasive writing exercise as part of the Key Stage 2 national curriculum, 8-year-old, William Gooch, put pen to paper and started writing a letter to try and convince a local business to step in and provide sponsorship for a brand new set of football strips for his school.
Paul Beadling, sales manager at Jennings Ford’s Riverside Road dealership in Sunderland, was the recipient of William’s personally written letter and he was so impressed with the contents, he contacted the school and agreed to provide funding to kit the football team out with a brand new set of strips.
Paul Beadling, said; “As a company heavily committed towards supporting the local community, we were more than willing to help William, his team mates and his school, with a set of new strips.
“William’s letter was exceptionally well written and the sponsorship is purely as a result of his persuasive writing skills.”
William was delighted when his teacher, Phil Henderson, informed him that his letter had persuaded local Ford dealer, Jennings, to step in and support the school with fundraising.
Pupils were given input into the style and colour of the strips and within a couple of weeks, they took delivery.
Despite the football season being over for the summer, the strips have boosted moral and pupils are looking forward to kicking next season off with a flying start.
Phil Henderson, teacher at Grange Park Primary School, said; “The children think our new strips are great and can’t wait to put them on for real in our first game of the season. The boys were always complaining about having holes in their socks and having to share the old strips with the girls’ football team and our other sporting teams. I think it is fantastic that Jennings Ford was able to sponsor new strips for the team – thanks to Jennings Ford, the boys now have their own set of strips and will look very smart for the start of our new football season.”
Competing in the Sunderland Primary Schools’ Football Association, which is a 7-a-side and 11-a-side league, the first game of the season is scheduled to take place mid October.
