With 970,000 sales worldwide and 25 years of proud history before it, the fourth generation Mazda MX-5 has been revealed ahead of its world debut at the Paris Motor Show.
Reversing a seemingly industry trend of increasing model size, the new Mazda MX-5 has the smallest footprint to date – 20mm lower and 105mm shorter than the previous edition. Additionally the front and rear overhangs have been reduced by 90mm and the wheelbase by 15mm. The stylish and driver focused interior is similar to the recently released Mazda3, with swivel steering control and a floating infotainment system.
With a reduction of more than 100kg in weight, the new Mazda MX-5 utilises a lightweight SkyActive chassis, whilst the engine is positioned behind the front axle and closed to the centre of the car to improve handling and lower the centre of gravity. The brakes are new and have been uprated to produce greater stopping power.
Mx-5 Engine Options
At this early stage the new Mazda MX-5 engine options are unconfirmed, but expected to include 1.5l and 2.0l petrol options with reduced CO2 levels, whilst producing 130bhp and 165bhp respectively. A diesel option has been mooted but not yet confirmed by Mazda.
