When it to comes to a vehicle that can excel no matter what the weather or terrain, the 4x4 takes some beating. These motors can take on anything that Mother Nature throws our way during the winter months, performing every bit as well as a car during the summer does. The British 4x4 market is very well catered to indeed, with plenty of bargains to be had; especially on used models, which can often be found at up to 65 per cent off original list price. If you are thinking about giving a used 4x4 a new home on your driveway, here are the models that we believe offer the best value for money.

Toyota RAV4

The Toyota RAV4 is one of the most popular 4x4’s in the UK and leads the way among the so-called ‘soft roaders’. The RAV4 is an excellent all-round vehicle, offering great comfort, excellent style and an abundance of space. To drive, this 4x4 is every bit as good as a car, the only real difference being the elevated seating position. The 2.2D is the pick of the engine choices.

Nissan Qashqai

The Nissan Qashqai scooped the 2011 award for What Car? Used Car of the Year, roundly regarded as the best family 4x4 on the market. In its review, What Car? said that the Qashqai offered “an imaginative approach to smaller hatchbacks, the quirky Qashqai is great for younger families” and praised the car for its supple ride and capable handling. The Qashqai +2, while expensive new, can be picked up at a reasonable price second hand and is the standout seven-seat 4x4 available.

Ford Kuga

The Kuga is one of the smaller 4x4’s on the market, but that doesn’t stop it from being one of the best. Based on the Ford Focus platform, the Kuga is probably the best vehicle on the list to drive and has the most modern appearance. As per all Ford’s, this 4x4 offers excellent reliability and fuel economy and comes well stocked with equipment. If you are not too bothered about boot space, the Kuga is a real winner. Consider purchasing a front-wheel drive model if you are not looking to venture off-road too often – these are cheaper to run and drive just as well. Land Rover Freelander

The Freelander is possibly the most iconic 4x4 in the world, offering everything you would expect of a genuine off-roader – on-road dynamics, outstanding off-road handling, plenty of miles per gallon and all the space you’ll ever need. There are a few variations of the Freelander on the market, but the five-door 2.2-litre TD4 is the outstanding candidate. Come across an XS version and you will get the added benefit of climate control and parking sensors

Hyundai Santa Fe

When you buy a Hyundai, you know that you are getting a vehicle that is stylish and built to last. The Santa Fe is not the cheapest 4x4 to run, but you get a lot of vehicle for your money, with plenty of space, power, and practicality. This car is as great to drive on the tarmac as it is the mud and has accurate handling to tackle any terrain. There is also a seven-seater model available, which, with a 2.2-litre CRDT engine, is the pick of the bunch.
