Including Kia’s first ever fuel-cell electric vehicle with a release date set of 2020, Head of R&D Centre for the South Korean company, Dr. Woong-chul Yang commented “By 2025, we will offer a total of 16 advanced powertrain vehicles, with five new hybrids and plug-in hybrids, five new battery EVs, and an all-new mass market FCEV. Due to launch in 2020, this FCEV will spearhead Kia’s efforts to realize a zero-emission future for mobility,”
Set to include the latest Kia battery technology, the Niro EV may have a driving range of 383 kilometres with a 64kWh lithium-polymer battery pack. Company insiders added that a bigger battery may lead to an increased range of 500km.
Following on from the unveiling of the Kia Niro EV concept earlier in the show, the brand is set for an “ongoing journey to electrification” and will include new technology including an Active Pedestrian Warning System that will use speakers to warn cyclists and passengers.
To meet the increased interest in fully automated car technology, Kia also announced that it aims to sell cars including the technology by 2021. Large fleet testing is set to commence in 2019, level 4 autonomy is set to allow the vehicles to be driven without driver input, but allow interaction if required. Dr. Woong-chul Yang added further “Kia’s connected cars will be both boundless and connected and offer a new kind of mobility experience. Virtual reality, self-driving cars, and ‘vehicle-to-everything’ connectivity were all once considered technologies of the distant future. As they rapidly become a reality, Kia is exploring how to deploy these new technologies for its customers.”
