Winter is on its way – Record snow predicted for November

As the temperatures drop and summer seems a distant memory, weather forecasters are predicting record levels of snow to fall in November due to a swathe of cold air from the Arctic. The poorly positioned Jetstream may well lead to a winter of record low temperatures that runs right through to February with regular heavy snowfall likely. A spokesman for Exacta Weather commented it was likely to be the worst winter for more than 100 years, adding “A horror winter scenario is likely to bring another big freeze with copious amounts of snow”. With this in mind, Jennings Motor Group recommends that you prepare for any adverse weather.

How can I prepare for winter?

There are a number of key things that you can do to ensure that you are best positioned to for any adverse weather. Below are a number of key steps Jennings Motor Group recommends to help get through whatever winter throws at you.

Winter health checks

A simple health check of your car can help to protect it and identify any areas of concern such as battery condition, wiper blades condition and tyre condition/pressure. Other key things to check include light bulbs, screen wash levels and anti-freeze levels. Jennings Motor Group is offering free winter health checks to help you and your car survive this winter.

Do I need Winter tyres?

Snow and ice can affect braking distances and cause skidding during periods of prolonged poor weather. The Department for Transport recently found that 48% of accidents in winter are caused by skidding, with just 11% in dry weather. One way to help combat this is to replace your standard tyres with winter tyres.  Winter tyres improve braking distances in cold and icy weather by using different compounds and treads to standard tyres improving grip at temperatures below 7 degrees C. The self-cleaning tread pattern moves out the snow to increase grip on the roads. Winter tyres are now at Jennings Motor Group with special offers available.

Car Survival Pack

Whenever you use your car in winter it is recommended that that you have a survival pack containing the following in case you get stuck due to the adverse weather.  The Red Cross advise the following is carried:

  • Emergency contact numbers
  • Torch and spare batteries
  • Essential medication
  • Bottled water and ready to eat food
  • Pencil, paper and whistle
  • First Aid Kit
  • Copies of documents including insurance and birth certificate

Additional things to consider having in a survival kit include a shovel, mobile phone charger, blanket and warm clothing.

Take extra care on the roads this winter, allowing extra time for journeys, reduce speed and leave additional braking distances in icy and wet conditions.
