The Fall Season Two from the BBC, and the Cars of the PSNI.
Posted on 18 Dec 2014
Many unique cars have found fame on TV, from Starsky and Hutch to Knightrider, but we’ve been car spotting in the latest episode of the Fall on BBC Two, and it was nice to see a couple of Jennings Motor Group favourites doing the rounds on the small screen.
The Fall, which is currently airing on BBC Two, is a thriller based around a complex Serial Killer in Belfast. As BBC Two’s biggest drama series in the last 8 years, it has drawn in an average audience of 3.5 million in its first season with figures continuing to rise leading up to the dramatic finale of season two.
Paul Spector, played by Jamie Dornan, is a chilling figure intent on plaguing Northern Ireland and tormenting Metropolitan Police Superintendent Stella Gibson, played by Gillian Anderson.
This week on The Fall, alongside the usual PSNI vehicles, there was a tense chase between the wily Spector and the surveillance team.
Featuring the undercover cars used by the Police Service of Northern Ireland in The Fall, Paul Spector was on foot trying to outsmart any potential surveillance.
The PSNI were zipping through the streets of Belfast, hot on the heels of Spector who was racing towards the Botanical Gardens, in both the Kia cee’d and a Ford Focus.
The PSNI are known for using a wide variety of vehicles in their everyday duties, the most famous of those being the colossal Land Rover Tangi. Now primarily used as a form of crowd control, it still remains as an image of Belfast during darker times.
In 2011 it was announced that some of the Tangis were to be replaced by the newly designed PANGOLIN - Armoured Public Order Vehicle - designed and built by OVIK Special Vehicles. Thankfully though, these over-bearing vehicles are not a true reflection of a new and rejuvenated Belfast.
Like any police service, even fictional representations of one, there are a mixture of vehicles including Vauxhalls, Volkswagens and Audis. In Belfast however, many older armoured vehicles are still in use, but newer cars are more likely to be non-armoured. The PSNI have a large fleet of Fords, in particular the Focus and Mondeo.
The Fall has featured a variety of cars from Stella’s BMW to the Assistant Chief Constables’ armoured saloon with every style in between.
Cars can play a huge part in film and TV, from the infamous Bond cars to films such as Herbie where the car has a mind of its own, and for us it’s always nice to see affordable, good quality cars used in day to day life because let’s face it, not everyone can afford an Aston Martin DB5 complete with ejector seat.
You can catch the feature length finale of The Fall at 9pm on BBC Two on Thursday the 18th of December 2014.
