Question

My 53 plate Mondeo TDCi 130 has developed an odd whine while driving. The noise is road speed rather than engine speed related, i.e. when the noise is heared, depressing the clutch and allowing the engine to reach idle speed does not affect the noise, nor does engaging neutral and releasing the clutch. I had initially suspected a wheel bearing, but the noise doesn't change while driving round corners and is more of a whine than the usual wheel bearing rumble. In case the two are connected, my clutch has begun to slip slightly if I accelerate while the turbo is boosting hard. The brakes are not binding and in any case, applying them does not alter the noise beyond it reducing with road speed. Gear selection is nice and smooth. I am hoping this may be something 'simple' like a drive shaft bearing but I have a niggling fear you may tell me you suspect the gearbox.

Question

I have a 2004 1.6 petrol 5 speed Focus Hatchback. It has done 42,000 miles. For the last few months, as I slowly release the clutch when reversing, I have noticed an unusual noise, hard to describe, not a screech, more like a light whistling sound. In the last week or so, it has also occurred when moving off in first gear. In all other respects the clutch seems to function fine. I am a mechanically sympathetic driver, but about a year ago I did have a problem moving the car forward on a very steep hill. I must have used too high revs as I released the clutch, as there was a strong smell of burnt clutch afterward. Do you think the clutch is needing replacement? Am I likely to cause damage to the flywheel if I continue to drive it in the meantime? Many thanks for any help you can provide.
