These changes will see the annual cost to tax many new cars increase. Designed to grow the revenues raised by the Exchequer, the years of benefiting from low road tax costs are set to be over.

The existing Vehicle Excise Duty system is based on the levels of CO2 emitted by the vehicle with the lower levels of emissions subject to only £20 or £30 even zero cost per year. The new system will see only exceptionally low emission vehicles, such as electric, charged the lower levels of taxation in the first year and then a flat rate of £140 charged. The table below explains the taxation levels that will apply to new cars bought and registered from 1 April 2017.

Over 255 £515 £2,000 £140

Cars above £40,000 will pay £310 annual supplement for first five years

Additionally, vehicles with a list price of over £40,000 will face a further annual charge of £310 on top of the standard £140 road tax that is being introduced. The ‘Premium Tax’ supplement is applicable from year two to five and will apply to every car over the set value. Dealer discounts and special manager offers that bring the actual cost under the £40,000 mark will not get around the new tax as it is the list price that affects the level of road tax charged. Additionally, any factory fitted accessories that are included in the purchase of a car taking the total cost over £40,000 will be subject to the Premium Tax.

Example Of Increase in Vehicle Excise Duty

If you own and run a lower emission fuel efficient car, such as the Ford Fiesta, Ford KA+ or Ford Focus, then the tax changes will mean that you will be paying higher road tax over the life of the car ownership. An example of this is the Ford Fiesta Zetec 1.5l ECOnetic that currently is £0 a year to tax. This will increase to £100 in the first year, followed by £140 a year in each subsequent year. While a Ford Focus Titanium 1.0l EcoBoost petrol will see it increase £20 a year to £140 on an annual basis.

Existing car owners and people purchasing used cars registered before 1 April 2017 will continue to pay the existing levels of Vehicle Excise Duty with the new implementations not affecting them.

Customers can continue to benefit from the lower rates of Vehicle Excise Duty at Jennings Motor Group before 1 April 2017. Buy a new car and have it registered before the change date and enjoy the lower charges for the lifetime you own the vehicle, not only the first year of tax charges.
